Freelance Copywriting - The Pros & Cons

Copywriters are needed in a variety of industries including healthcare, sports, finance, and fashion. Copywriters can assist businesses by creating lead-generating content such as blogs, social media posts, landing pages, marketing email campaigns, and more. A growing number of businesses are hiring copywriters to increase scalability and brand presence while saving time and money.

While copywriters are needed everywhere, this type of writing is quite unique. You can write in a vertical market where you have expertise in one skill while also getting paid to learn about other industries and professions that you are unfamiliar with. Having said that, copywriting isn't for everyone. In order to create exceptional copy that moves your company forward, you must be extremely focused and disciplined.

Black Forest Global has compiled a list of pros and cons of being a copywriter to help you decide whether it is the job for you. And if your company needs professional copywriting, the marketing division at Black Forest Global has experts ready to help!

Pro: Flexibility

While a corporate job can provide more stability in your career, freelancing provides more flexibility. Working as a freelance copywriter comes with the ability to work when and where you want. Because you don't have to commit to a single business, you can work from home, which means your potential customer base is much larger. You can also adjust your working hours if you do not want to work full-time. The choice is yours!

Con: Motivation

Writing in any form is a creative outlet, and writers understand the burnout that comes with hours of churning out content. Some days, the words flow. Some days, they do not. So, as a freelance copywriter, you must be able to overcome a lack of motivation in order to meet deadlines and produce quality content for your clients. Keep in mind that not all clients are easy to please. If you lack the motivation to stay on track, this job may not be a good fit for you.

Pro: On the Job Learning

Working as a copywriter allows you to learn a lot of new things. And who doesn't want a career that provides ample opportunities for growth and advancement? Copywriting usually entails a significant amount of research to help you come up with winning content that can convert leads. During your research, you may come across new concepts and skills that pique your interest. Exploring something new will allow you to use your creativity to ensure that you meet your client’s conversion goals.

Con: Creative Limitations

A significant aspect of copywriting is producing fresh ideas for your work while adhering to your client's vision and marketing parameters. When it comes to the amount of creative freedom you have as a copywriter, there can be some push and pull.

Pro: Variety of Work

As said above, copywriters are required in almost every type of organization. This provides a wide range of jobs and topics to write about. From business and travel to entertainment and politics, the choice is yours. Most copywriters, however, eventually find a niche, developing skills and a portfolio in a specific area.

Con: Salary

While freelance copywriting can be a lucrative profession, a steady stream of work is not always guaranteed. For many people considering a career in freelance copywriting, the lack of passive income is a major disadvantage. You must be prepared to find new projects one after the other, which isn't always easy when you're first starting out.

Now that we have laid out some of the benefits and drawbacks of freelance copywriting, it's up to you to decide whether or not this fast-growing career is the right one for you. For any more questions about copywriting and other freelancing careers, contact our team at Black Forest Global
